Cornell Unveils Scalable Ultrablack Light-Absorbing Fabric
Researchers at Cornell University have developed a new method for producing "ultrablack" fabric that absorbs more than 99.5% of light. The process uses a two-step approach by first dyeing a white merino wool knit fabric with polydopamine. The fabric is then placed in a plasma chamber, where etching creates nanoscale spiky features known as nanofibrils. These nanofibrils mimic the light-trapping properties seen in the feathers of the magnificent riflebird, a natural example of ultrablack coloration.
According to the research team in the Responsive Apparel Design (RAD) Lab at the College of Human Ecology, the resulting fabric maintains its dark appearance even when viewed from wider angles. The technique is noted for being simple to manufacture, scalable, wearable, and compatible with various natural materials such as wool, silk, and cotton.
The researchers have applied for patent protection through the Cornell Center for Technology Licensing and plan to form a company based on their process.
